At Amazon, we are seeking outstanding Principal Economists with deep expertise to join interdisciplinary teams who are able to provide structure around complex business problems, hone those complex problems into specific, scientific questions, and test those questions to generate insights. The ideal candidate will analyze data sets applying state-of-the-art-methods to assist in predictive and causal modeling. They will work with engineers, machine learning scientists and computer scientists to estimate models and algorithms on large scale data, design pilots and measure their impact, and transform successful prototypes into improved policies and programs at scale. They will assist developers with the translation of statistical and numerical methods into production systems.

We are particularly interested in candidates with research background in applied microeconomics with a concentration in causal analysis, finance, time series, empirical IO, marketing, applied econometrics, and market design.

Responsibilities include:

  • Own the development of economic models and manage the data analysis, modeling, and experimentation necessary to validate your model. Create scalable mechanisms and best practices.
  • Effectively communicate econometric models to business teams and incorporate feedback into project analysis/modeling.

Core AI - This Central Economics team is an interdisciplinary team on the cutting edge of economics, statistical analysis, and machine learning whose mission is to solve AI and ML problems that have high risk with abnormally high returns. Through our efforts we seek to understand and design Amazon's complex network of buyers and sellers, while also leveraging the strengths of our engineers and scientists to build solutions for some of the toughest business problems here at Amazon.

Amazon Studios - This team shapes the future of television through economic analysis, data science, and advanced analytics. We’ve got the shows people love to watch (Jack Ryan, The Expanse, The Boys) and the Emmy Awards love to honor (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Fleabag). On this team, you will quantify the business-wide economic value of content, drivers of that value, arbitrage opportunities, and relationships and patterns between different shows to optimize global content investment and surface development opportunities.

AWS - Representing the cloud storage business at Amazon, AWS is one of Amazon’s fastest growing business segments. The AWS Economics team’s mission is to foster rigorous economic thinking using sound econometric methods across AWS to support internal decision making and public-facing communications. Our main areas of focus are: DSI (Downstream Impact), Forecasting and Pricing.

Customer Experience Strategy - The Customer Experience Strategy team aims to help achieve Amazon’s mission: to be Earth's Most Customer-centric Company. We relentlessly focus on raising the bar and driving change across all of Amazon, including Video, Alexa, Seller, and Retail.

Customer Behavior and Analytics - The Customer Behavior and Analytics team uses Economics, Statistics, and Machine Learning to understand and design the complex economy of Amazon’s network of buyers and sellers. We are an interdisciplinary team, committed to use of cutting edge technology and leveraging the strengths of engineers and scientists to build solutions for some of the toughest business problems at Amazon.

Human Resources Central Sciences - The Human Resources Central Science Team uses economics, behavioral science, statistics, and machine learning to proactively identify mechanisms and process improvements which simultaneously improve Amazon and the lives, well-being, and the value of work to Amazonians. HRCS is an interdisciplinary team which combines the talents of science and engineering to develop and deliver solutions that measurably achieve this goal.

Trends & Analytics - This team creates insights and predictive models for senior Amazon leaders in areas such as customer experience and marketing.


Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Economics or highly related quantitative field (Finance, Statistics, Math, Physics)
  • 10+ years of experience in industry, consulting, government, or academic research

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in applied economic analysis, causal inference and econometrics
  • Experience with big data and machine learning techniques
  • Coding ability in a scripting language such as R, Python, Matlab, or STATA
  • Thinks strategically, but stays on top of tactical execution
  • Exhibits high business judgment, and has effective verbal and written communications skills
  • Has deep knowledge of all significant work in the scientific community across a number of specialty areas
